Deep Sky Alpha – CO₂ Capture Laboratory
Conceptual project
Deep Sky Alpha is a laboratory designed to showcase CO₂ capture technologies and advances in global decarbonization research. Developed in collaboration with Carl Robichaud, Creative Director at Deep Sky Climate, the project expresses the company’s innovation through architecture that is both expressive and functional, closely aligned with its climate-focused mission.
The complex is organized around two circular volumes connected by a central pedestrian bridge, creating a clear, fluid, and intuitive visitor journey. A water feature and a paved path lined with vegetation guide movement across the site, while organic forms inspired by natural systems create looped entrances that enhance orientation and circulation.
Set back from the main buildings, the technical yard houses the CO₂ capture units on permeable cellular pavers, reducing soil impermeability. More than half of the site is dedicated to green spaces, supporting biodiversity and the continuity of natural habitats, while strategically designed landscaping helps integrate and partially screen the technical infrastructure.
The project prioritizes a timber structure, significantly limiting the use of concrete and asphalt. It incorporates proven environmental strategies, including renewable energy sources, stormwater management, and green roofs, thereby reducing heat island effects and enhancing site resilience.
Building placement and generous openings maximize natural daylight, creating bright, comfortable spaces for both visitors and research teams. Deep Sky Alpha exemplifies an integrated approach in which architecture, technology, and environmental performance converge to create a sustainable, coherent building deeply rooted in its context.
