Industrial buildings are often overlooked in sustainability discussions, yet they hold tremendous potential for integrating practices that drive sustainable innovation. Fernando Lozano, CEO of GKC Architecture & Design, shares insights into the challenges and opportunities of creating industrial architecture that respects both the environment and local communities.
Today’s industrial buildings bear no resemblance to the square boxes of the past. They are designed to be aesthetic, functional, and above all, sustainable. While LEED principles remain relevant, the new goal is to achieve zero-carbon buildings.

Lozano also highlights the positive impact sustainable industrial buildings can have on municipalities, thanks to their minimal reliance on public infrastructure and fiscal contributions. “Industrial construction can genuinely improve residents’ quality of life. For example, in a project in Kirkland near a residential area, we added a green berm and a sound barrier. This not only enhanced backyard views but also reduced highway noise, as confirmed by local residents,” he notes.
To reduce environmental impact, Lozano emphasizes two critical strategies: stormwater management and high-performance building envelopes. “With climate change, managing stormwater is essential—whether through retention ponds integrated into landscaping or underground systems. Equally important is prioritizing materials with high insulation values for cladding and roofing,” he says.
One of GKC’s key differentiators is its strategic advisory service, which goes far beyond design. “We start by understanding the client’s business thoroughly. This allows us to advise on how the building will evolve over time, even up to its eventual resale,” Lozano explains.
GKC also stands out for its constant vigilance in tracking new technologies, industry innovations, and available funding programs.
