A new R&D centre focused on collaboration

Ericsson, the Swedish telecommunications giant present in Québec since 1955, sought to establish a new research and development (R&D) centre in the Greater Montréal area to replace its former facilities on Décarie Boulevard, whose lease was set to expire.

The project aimed to consolidate all activities and the service’s 1,700 employees on a single campus. The client ultimately selected Groupe Montoni site located on Poirier Street in the borough of Saint‑Laurent, Montréal, due to its strategic location at the intersection of Highways 13 and 40 and its proximity to the airport.

Orchestrating complex work within tight timelines

As part of this large‑scale project, GKC—a long‑standing partner of Ericsson—took on the challenge of implementing the building plans for Montoni (acting as general contractor). These plans were developed in collaboration with Ericsson’s Swedish architectural firm, Wingårdhs.

Radically different from Ericsson’s former facilities, the new centre was designed to foster interaction and collaboration. It features two open‑plan office towers of three and five storeys, connected by a central lobby, flexible workspaces, and a strong emphasis on natural light and greenery.

The project also included a one-storey building housing a daycare for children and a large cafeteria for employees, as well as a significant underground parking garage and a multi-level outdoor parking facility, providing nearly 1,200 vehicle spaces.

The staggered layout of the buildings created landscaped areas between them and provided a high‑quality visual environment for employees. The multi‑level parking structure also serves as a physical, visual, and acoustic buffer between the site and the adjacent highway.

Adapting the design to local regulations

To successfully carry out its mandate, GKC faced several challenges, particularly regarding municipal regulations.

Balancing practicality and creativity

The team also leveraged its technical expertise to coordinate the work of the many other disciplines involved—structural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and civil engineering—ensuring that construction progressed according to schedule and in compliance with the local Construction Code.

“For example, we had to maintain sufficient ceiling clearance while integrating building systems. The construction of the atrium staircases, with their complex shapes and openings, also required precise coordination to meet fire‑resistance standards while respecting the design chosen by the client,” notes Erdal Biberoglu, GKC Team Lead for the project.

Ingenious solutions

Given the demanding schedule, which was dictated by the scale and complexity of the project, the team also had to address complex challenges, such as securing the large, perforated metal screen that clad the multi-storey car park and integrating the numerous strategies required to achieve the LEED® Gold certification targeted by Ericsson.
